Lesson 4 — Identity Scripts & Self-Concept

This lesson examines identity scripts as predictive structures. The objective is recognition — not reconstruction.

MMI: Safety → Clarity Noticing = Progress
Success: Understanding precedes modification.

Concept Focus & Clarity

  • Identity scripts are internal statements the brain treats as stable truths to maintain behavioral predictability.
  • Self-concept is reinforced through repetition, selective attention, and memory filtering.
  • The nervous system prioritizes identity continuity because uncertainty increases threat load.
  • Many “personality traits” are long-running protective strategies that became normalized.
  • When behavior conflicts with identity scripts, the system often defaults to the familiar to restore coherence.
MMI Note: dentity scripts are learned stabilizers. Recognition introduces flexibility without destabilizing continuity.

Ask Sage

Select one prompt — or observe without response.

  • What statement about “who I am” appears most consistently?
  • What context likely reinforced this script?
  • What behavior does this script stabilize?
  • What feels uncertain if this script were questioned?
  • How would this script sound if described neutrally?

Integration Complete

If you can identify at least one identity script influencing your choices, this lesson’s objective is met. Identity evolves through safe prediction updates — not force. You may proceed when ready.
